World Down Syndrome Day is observed in over 60 countries across the world. Organisations including the United Nations and Down Syndrome International promote World Down Syndrome Day to raise people’s awareness and understanding of Down syndrome.
When Is World Down Syndrome Day 2019?
World Down Syndrome Day is observed every year on 21st March to raise awareness of the congenital disorder caused by having an extra 21st chromosome. The first event took place in 2012.
What is Down Syndrome?
It is a naturally occurring arrangement of chromosomes that has always been a part of the human condition, affecting around 1 in 800 births worldwide. This causes intellectual disability and medical issues.
Wear Odd Socks!
Many people wear odd socks on World Down Syndrome Day and post pictures of them to social media with the hashtag #lotsofsocks
The initiative is part of the ”Lots of Socks” campaign, created by Down Syndrome International, to encourage people to start a conversation about diversity, uniqueness, inclusion and acceptance.
